Women* have been and still are often severely underrepresented in MINT subjects. Unfortunately, this often results in them having difficulties with applications or in their professional life due to not being seen as an equal to their male colleagues. Social pressure is also a major factor in preventing them from starting or considering a career path in IT, or anything in MINT.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

As part of the institute’s own GIDIS project (“Strenghening Equality in Computer Science\u201d), the Institute for Computer Science awards a prize to honour outstanding female students. The prize is endowed with 300 \u20ac and is intended to motivate female students and offer them a good opportunity to present their work and promote female representation.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The award is named after Grace Hopper, a computer scientist who worked for the US Army. She played a key role in the development of the programming language COBOL. A very early programming language that was developed at the end of the 1950s, and thus at a time when punch cards were still being punched. Despite her great success, she remained rather unknown, as women in this field, then as now, are still seen as rather unusual.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

In den MINT-F\u00e4chern sind Frauen* h\u00e4ufig stark unterrepr\u00e4sentiert. Diese Tatsache f\u00fchrt leider h\u00e4ufig dazu, dass sie einerseits h\u00e4ufig Schwierigkeiten bei Bewerbungen oder im Arbeitsleben haben, weil sie nicht f\u00fcr voll genommen werden, und andererseits durch gesellschaftlichen Druck davon abgehalten werden, \u00fcberhaupt erst in der Informatik anzufangen.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Das Institut f\u00fcr Informatik verleiht im Rahmen des institutseigenen GIDIS-Projektes (\u201eGleichstellung in der Informatik st\u00e4rken\u201c) einen Preis, um herausragende Studentinnen auszuzeichnen. Der Preis ist mit 300 \u20ac dotiert und soll Studentinnen motivieren und ihnen eine gute M\u00f6glichkeit bieten, ihre Arbeiten vorzustellen und sichtbarer zu werden.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Der Preis ist benannt nach Grace Hopper<\/a>, einer Informatikerin bei der US-amerikanischen Armee. Ma\u00dfgeblich beteiligt war sie an der Entwicklung der Programmiersprache COBOL, einer sehr fr\u00fchen Programmiersprache, die Ende der 1950er Jahre entwickelt wurde, und damit also in einer Zeit, in der noch Lochkarten gestanzt wurden. Trotz ihrer gro\u00dfartigen Erfolge blieb sie eher unbekannt, da Frauen in diesem Bereich, damals wie heute, eher un\u00fcblich waren.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
